Carpentry Licence Tasmania

In Tasmania, trade licences are issued by the Department of Justice. While there is no specific carpentry licence, the trade falls under the building work category, which covers building construction and repair. To carry out any building work that exceeds $5,000 (incl. labour and materials) a registered owner-builder or accredited builder must supply a building permit. Unaccredited building practitioners or tradespeople may carry out building work valued below $5,000, even if the work requires a building permit.
Builder accreditation in Tasmania is categories as follows:

  • Demolisher
  • Construction Manager
  • Builder
  • Fire Protection Services

The work can be categorised as follows:

  • Open
  • Low Rise
  • Medium Rise

Requirements

Under the Regulation, air-conditioning work is:

  • any work required to install, maintain and service an air-conditioning system (other than a self-contained single-phase plug-in domestic air-conditioning system) in a structure, building, vessel, container or railway vehicle
  • work required to comply with the requirements of Australian Standard AS 1668.2 – 2002, The use of ventilation and air-conditioning in buildings, Part 2: Ventilation design for indoor air contaminant control
  • work required to comply with the requirements of Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 3666:2002, Air-handling and water systems of buildings – Microbial control, relating to the maintenance of cooling towers,
  • associated electrical wiring work of the kind described in the section below.

How to Apply

In order to apply for building practitioner accreditation, you must:

  • Complete the Building Practitioner Application Form
  • Choose a builder class
  • Indicate your experience and relevant qualifications
  • Submit supporting documents
  • Submit a resume and two detailed references
  • Include the appropriate Net Tangible Asset Statement applicable to your builder class
  • Submit your fees (($183.60 application cost and $367.20 annual accreditation cost = $550.80)
  • Attend an interview.
