Before advertising, contracting, subcontracting or carrying out any residential painting projects totaling $1,000 or more (materials and labour included), you must be registered with and licenced by the NSW Department of Fair Trading.
The NSW Department of Fair Trading will require that you have a CPC30620 Certificate III in Painting and Decorating qualification, or a minimum of one of the following if you want to apply for a painting licence in NSW:

The process of applying for a painters licence in NSW starts with downloading the application checklists and forms from the NSW Department of Fair Trading Website. Print the documents, complete the requirements, and attach the supporting documents to your application form. You must lodge your application along with the supporting documents and checklist in person at your nearest Government Access Centre or Service NSW office. The application fee will be payable at the same time. Your licence number and licence card will be mailed to you on approval.
