Before advertising, contracting, subcontracting or carrying out any residential painting projects totaling $1,000 or more (materials and labour included), you must be registered with and licenced by the NSW Department of Fair Trading.
Requirements
The NSW Department of Fair Trading will require that you have a CPC30620 Certificate III in Painting and Decorating qualification, or a minimum of one of the following if you want to apply for a painting licence in NSW:

- BCG30498 Certificate III in General Construction (Painting & Decorating) TAFE course #8063
- CPC30608 Certificate III in Painting and Decorating
- BCG30603 Certificate III in Painting and Decorating
Registered Training Organisations may be able to assess and credit you for already acquired experience and skills. In some cases, you may need gap training to ensure that you meet the competency units for skills such as:
- wallpapering
- imitation marbling
- woodgrain stenciling
- safe lead paint
- safe asbestos work
How to Apply
The process of applying for a painters licence in NSW starts with downloading the application checklists and forms from the NSW Department of Fair Trading Website. Print the documents, complete the requirements, and attach the supporting documents to your application form. You must lodge your application along with the supporting documents and checklist in person at your nearest Government Access Centre or Service NSW office. The application fee will be payable at the same time. Your licence number and licence card will be mailed to you on approval.
